Chuck Bane joined the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering, University of San Diego (USD) as a professor of practice in June 2018 and in April 2020 became the Academic Director of the MS Cybersecurity Engineering program. He is a highly-motivated professional with over twenty years of teaching and curriculum development experience on both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Additionally, he was a collaborator in the application process for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the National Security Agency (NSA) Center of Academic Excellence, which successfully resulted in the Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity designation. A project management, communications and security professional with over thirty-five years’ experience in project management, systems security analysis, design, development and management of network systems supporting the Department of Defense (DoD).
Chuck, a retired US Naval Officer, had an extensive US Naval career covering 25 years of service. His career covered 11 years of enlisted service in submarines as nuclear reactor operator and 14 years as a commissioned officer in Surface Warfare.
Chuck’s teaching philosophy is to teach in a way that draws in and interest students in a wide range of cybersecurity and computer science topics. Through extensive use of computer virtualization, he helps students develop safe environments for hands-on implementation while learning the theory and foundations of class topics. Chuck also has developed capstone project classes and has supervised many MS and BS student capstone projects.
