San Jose, CA – Bright Computing, the leading provider of hardware-agnostic cluster and cloud management software, announces it has provided Van Andel Institute (VAI), an independent biomedical research and science education organization in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with high-performance systems management software that lets them implement HPC cluster infrastructure in a private hybrid cloud. Using Bright’s OpenStack deployment wrapper, the Institute is implementing a unique hybrid infrastructure that uses both grid and cluster computing and cloud computing in the same infrastructure. VAI scientists utilize genomic sequencing analyses, molecular dynamics simulation, and modeling to research epigenetics, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s.
The system, developed in collaboration with solutions infrastructure vendor Silicon Mechanics, is expected to help computers at VAI be more efficient with far less administrator involvement.
“Using Bright reduces the labor and effort needed for management and change control, and also facilitates the accelerating trend toward cloud computing,” said Zack Ramjan, research computing architect at VAI. “Grid and cluster computing has been the standard for years, but we know that cloud computing is the wave of the future. Although our existing workloads are 90 percent cluster/grid, we expect to move toward the cloud in the future, and Bright offers an expandable and scalable turnkey solution for allocating resources. We can dynamically shift the ratio between cloud and cluster resources without down time.
According to Bright Computing CEO Matthijs van Leeuwen, the VAI project is an excellent example of how Bright’s integrated management solutions can be the foundation for combining high-performance computing, big data, and private cloud environments. “VAI is among the many research computing users who want to combine HPC workloads with big data analytics workloads in the same infrastructure and to have the choice of working in either a bare metal or virtualized infrastructure,” said van Leeuwen. “Bright’s management solution provides VAI with a single pane of glass management for the hardware, operating system, software, and users. The users can offload the work to a public cloud or to a mixed environment, with some servers run on-premises and some in the cloud.”
