Nova-networking has been a staple of Openstack since nearly the beginning. Still in use by many organizations, it is stable and well tested. As organizations continue to move to a more feature-rich network orchestration framework, Nova-networking is no longer meeting their needs, and Neutron is the future. Unfortunately, there's no clear migration strategy for moving from Nova-networking to Neutron.
In this talk we will:
- Detail our migration of several live Icehouse environments running nova-networking with the linuxbridge plugin and VLAN network segmentation over to Neutron
- Share the code and documentation written to achieve this with minimal tenant impact, and
- Answer questions anyone may have
Migrating from legacy code is always a tough proposition, but by tackling it together it's one which doesn't have to be insurmountable.
Attendees should expect to learn strategies for migrating existing nova-network environments over to equivalent neutron deployments. But, most importantly, attendees should leave feeling as though migrating from legacy systems is not an insurmountable proposition, but with a little planning and thinking can be done with relative ease.
