Hands-On: Orchestrating Docker Containers with Heat

RSVP required.

Roll up your sleeves & build Docker-based web services through the OpenStack Orchestration framework.  Docker provides a quick and consistent way to containerize your applications, making them perfect for deploying on a cloud platform.  OpenStack provides an orchestration framework, the Heat project, to allow end-users to quickly and easily deploy complex services in a consistent, scalable manner.  By combining the two, you now have a powerful tool to help you conquer the world.  These frameworks can be intimidating, however, and many users stay away because they're uncomfortable being responsible for instigating such a severe change in the way their company deploys.  In this session, we will introduce the basic concepts of OpenStack Orchestration and Docker, and provide hands-on experience to help demystify the process and get to that comfort level.  **Note** Attendees will need their own laptop to connect to our local OpenStack instance and fully participate in the lab.

What can I expect to learn?

Attendees will have the chance to connect to our in-class OpenStack environment and work through a series of incrementally more complex scenarios.  The first exercises will involve launching a single container, then multiple. From there we will introduce networking concepts to our service to customize the connectivity between these containers as well as multiple workload types.  By the end, they will have a multi-tier web-based application up and running.
