Project Vitrage: How to Organize, Analyze and Visualize your OpenStack Cloud

When problems or strange behaviors emerge in a complex cloud environment, it's difficult to understand what is causing them, making the management of such systems untenable.

The Vitrage project is designed to address precisely this.

Vitrage is a new Root Cause Analysis Engine for organizing, analyzing and expanding OpenStack alarms & events, yielding insights regarding the root cause of problems and deducing the existence of problems before they are directly detected.

Its ultimate goal is that every significant occurrence in the cloud should have a timely alarm generated for it, and that the cause-effect relationships between these events is understood and visualized.

In this session we'll present Vitrage for the first time. In addition to going over its goals, design and planned features, we will demo three features supported for the Mitaka version of Vitrage:

1. A clear view of the Cloud Topology

2. Configurable template-based raising of alarms

3. The Root Cause Analysis of these alarms

What can I expect to learn?

Attendees of this session will learn how Vitrage can help them improve their understanding of their OpenStack environment.

Whether an IT manager or an application owner on the cloud, Vitrage can help them get a clear idea of what is happening, and get to the root of the problem quickly.

OpenStack developers will benefit further from this session.

Vitrage has a pluggable architecture, with the ability to integrate new information sources easily as well as define new types of alarms to raise.

Developers will discover how they can help move Vitrage forward to reach its maximum potential, whether for their own company or for the OpenStack community.

Furthermore, as this is the first time Vitrage is presented, attendees will get to hear about the motivation behind the project, its core design principles, and its current status
