Baremetal as a Service Within the Enterprise: An SAP Use-Case

SAP provides a number of offerings where HANA systems are made available to customers in a cloud environment. In this environment, resources are shared among numerous HANA deployments, with secure network, storage, and access control to ensure the confidentiality of customer data and operations. A custom, in-house baremetal infrastructure lifecycle management solution was created in order to deploy and manage the resources used to deliver these HANA landscapes in the cloud. However, other internal management systems also exist to manage different types of cloud environments, including virtual machines for smaller HANA systems. To consolidate these systems into a single infrastructure and environment, we are beginning to move from a fully in-house solution to a hybrid solution, using OpenStack as a common management framework. The work presented in this document describes our approach to adopting OpenStack within our existing baremetal infrastructure management solution, which will soon be used in production. It should also be noted that this work will be also used to support other baremetal infrastructure management use cases within SAP’s cloud portfolio.

What can I expect to learn?

We first provide an overview of the current baremetal infrastructure lifecycle management solution used for delivering HANA landscapes in cloud. We then discuss the requirements that led us to evaluate OpenStack for adoption to complement our infrastructure management solution. A description of our approach to OpenStack evaluation and our findings is then given. This is followed by a description of the integration process, showing how our in-house management tool was adapted to use some of the OpenStack components. Finally, an outlook on the plans for further OpenStack adoption concludes this work.
