Mark has been doing storage performance monitoring and benchmarking for over 15 years, first in High Performance Computing and now in OpenStack Swift.  His opensource collectl monitoring tool has been installed on some of the largers super computers in the world and has also been enhanced to support swift monitoring as well.

His philisophy has always been benchmarking is a lot more than just recording and reporting numbers.  Rather, it's all about using the data to indentify areas for improvement, something he's been doing with swift for the last 6 years.
