No Team? No Problem! How a Single Admin Manages 70 OpenStack Nodes

One complaint we always hear about OpenStack is that managing an big environment takes a team of people, but we've found that it's simply not true.

In this talk, you'll see how switching to OpenStack actually saved us time and money by replacing a few dozen workstations with just two OpenStack clusters that consist of 70 nodes -- all managed by a single admin.

More than that, though, we'll talk about issues you're likely to face and how to solve them, as well as what we needed to do to make it possible for one person to manage all of these resources.

What can I expect to learn?

Attendees will:

  • See a comparison of managing the cloud versus managing individual workstations to achieve the same result
  • Learn about cultural issues involved in moving people from having "their own" machines to using VMs
  • Look at methods we've used to make managing the cloud less resource-intensive, such as scripts and other techniques
  • Find out what a lone admin needs to know to make this work

I have a background in astrophysics and art. I've started operating Openstack 3 years ago. We then did our own deployment using Puppet. Our newer Openstack deployments are deployed with Fuel.  In my free time i like to do some alpine climbing and rock climbing.  FULL PROFILE

"Missed a real history about experiences dealing with the environment, and tips & tricks when being the only cloud admin. Instead, we got a poor bunch of typical advices that anyone in this industry already knows. "
