Software Defined Infrastructure Using RackScale Design for the Under-Cloud

Think back to the days when you could go online and custom order your server. The vendor could hold little inventory, assembling on the fly. Similarly, think of a pool of disaggregated hardware (storage, compute, and networking), from which nodes can be dynamically composed and attached or detached from a cloud customized to a workload. A node for storage would be composed with more Solid State Devices than one for compute. We introduce RedFish API and Intel Rack Scale Design Extensions. We highlight its abilities to compose, boot, monitor, power on and off, create VLANs via the API without directly logging into the Switch. We next share the solution which integrates with Fuel, to deploy an OpenStack cloud and our motivation to develop “RSC” as a project, working with Fuel, Juju, and TripleO, to realize the vision of SDI. You can dynamically grow and shrink clouds, through plugins in Nova, Ironic, Horizon and policies in Congress for increased load or quiet spells.
