OpenStack has many capabilities that improve application performance: CPU and PCI topology awareness, core pinning, and multiqueue virtual interfaces. However, more is required for real-time applications.
Just like in many other industries, telco is transitioning to cloud computing. Mobile core network on the cloud has already moved towards productization. The next challenge is the cloudification of real-time applications such as the 5G radio network.
The radio requirements are increasingly harsh: video will dominate the traffic on mobile networks, users expect always-on notifications when a rare game creature appears on the street, and self-driving cars need reliable low-latency communications.
Even with these new challenges, the radio access network must provide near real-time performance. This requires full stack optimization covering hardware, cloud stack and applications. As a result, cloud computing with OpenStack will also benefit telco use cases, including 5G and IoT.
