Ops: Logging and Monitoring

https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/BCN-ops-logging-monitoring

The Ops Meetup, organized by the User Committee's Ops Meetups Team, is a track comprised of collaborative, working sessions for people who are operating OpenStack clouds (and contributors who want to hear from them). The purpose is to share knowledge and best practices among cloud operators, as well as provide feedback based on experience running OpenStack. There will be no formal presentations, and a moderate level of knowledge around running OpenStack is assumed. If you're just starting out, the Operations Tools and War Stories tracks of the conference will be much more friendly!

About this session
OpenStack deployments are complex to maintain. There are thousands of variables and dozens of services in multiple possible topologies. As Operators we are the first line of defense when issues start to creep out in production. In this session we will discuss the mechanisms available to alert Operators when a problem occurs or when metrics/trends signal that the environment is not in optimal condition anymore. We will discuss how data can be collected in different forms - logs, events, checks, etc. - and what are the most popular and effective tools being used by our community. In addition we will discuss what are the advantages/disadvantages of these open tools when we compare existing OpenStack projects such as Ceilometer/Aodh/Gnocci & Monasca. In addition we will identify what content (plugins, filters, visualizations, etc.) associated to these tools is already available and shared in open source and what are best options for reuse & associated best practices. Participants are expected to share their latest developments in this important Operational area.

Some popular tools we would like to discuss are:

  • ELK (ElasticSearch, Logstash & Kibana)
  • Nagios, Icinga, Sensu, Zabbix, etc.
  • Graphite/Collectd, Influx/Telegraf, Ganglia, Grafana, etc.
  • Intersection with existing OpenStack projects

Lastly, we will try to make sense of the vast proliferation of monitoring tools and what are their pros and cons for different usage scenarios.
