Successfully Deploying Massive Applications on OpenStack

Telecom VNFs need to handle hundreds of millions of subscribers, making them much larger than typical enterprise OpenStack applications. They also necessitate a higher degree of availability. These requirements present unique challenges for successful deployment, which are difficult to explore in a smaller environment.

The challenges include those of sheer scale, such as orchestration issues with hundreds of VMs, VNFs that consume multiple VIMs, very high PPS counts on multiple vNICs, and long distance replication. The telecommunications enterprise world also brings challenges, such as mandatory interconnection with many legacy apps and tools, compliance with restrictive security policies, utilizing multiple infrastructure vendors, and coordinating across multiple organizations.

We discuss these challenges, possible solutions, and what to focus on to ensure that deployments of large applications on OpenStack are successful.
